As the need for real-time analytics and customer information grows more important, retailers need robust systems to manage the ever-expanding volumes of data.

Based in Charlotte, N.C., Belk is one of the country’s largest privately owned department store companies. Now in its 126th year in business, the retailer has made a lot of changes over the years — these days, it’s all about using technology to better serve customers of its more than 300 locations across 16 southern states.

Almost five years ago, Belk began improving its IT operations to better serve its customers and take a bigger step into the future of retail. Jeff Huckaby, Belk’s director of information delivery (business intelligence and analytics), marketing and customer relationship management, says the company made the shift to Teradata’s platform to improve operational efficiency and make better use of information.

“The company realized that we needed to improve IT to lay the foundation for the transition to become an omnichannel retailer and to meet the changing needs of our customers,” Huckaby says.
